University of Michigan's Treatment Assignment Tool (Tatum) is a secure, interactive web-based system used for centralized patient treatment assignment for research studies.

View press release

What it does

  • Tatum assists clinical study team and staff during the subject randomization process with treatment assignment.
  • It provides a centralized location and process for multi-site studies to manage randomized subject treatment patients.

My role

I played the role of an interaction designer on this project. I was charged with making a product whose interface was simple and comprehendable for its users.

Our team consisted of two application developers, a web designer, a project manager and myself.

Simplicity for study teams

In a randomized clinical trial, the goal of the treatment allocation is to assign patients to a treatment in an unbiased manner. In a randomized clinical trial, the goal of the treatment allocation is to assign patients to a treatment in an unbiased manner. One way that this masking of the assignment has traditionally been achieved is by sealing the treatment assignments in envelopes.

Treatment Assignment Tool at the University of Michigan (TATUM) allows investigators to electronically open an envelope to assign study participants to a treatment.

For it to work well, the tool had to be as simple to use as envelopes. Hence the interface is based on simplicity.

Information at the right place at the right time

For TATUM to be easy to use and widely adapted, it had to have easy access to information and the point when it is needed the most.

Hence TATUM has features designed that helps the on-boarding process for new users and also provide easy access to information for regular users.

Ease of use for the patients

For patients to get their treatments, they would need to answer a set of questions and the tratment would be mailed to them.

The process needs to be easy for the patients that are taking part in the study.

Hence the interface is designed to be transparent to the patients.

Grid and dimensions

Here is an example of the grid and dimensions that TATUM is based on.
