MICHR

Michigan Institute of Clinical and Health Research (MICHR) is committed to moving medicine forward by enabling & enhancing clinical & translational research at U-M.

User Research

revealed many issues with the existing site including findability, keeping the content current and aggregation of resources in one centralized location especially in a decentralized environment like the U-M.

michr.umich.edu

is a result of many months of user research, looking at analytics and a sustained effort at creating a solution for the people and not just making a good looking website.

Findability

Talking to lots of users and observing them use the current website made us realize that there was a lot of useful and relevant material already on the existing site but people just could not find it. We created a variety of ways to help people find what they were looking for including reorganizing the website based on where they were in their study process, providing lots of cross refrence options, renaming some of the services to match what people thought of them, a fully customized search functionality and an omnipresent sitemap in the footer.

Keeping the content current

The content on the website was not current and hence not very useful to our users. On digging further, we realized that the problem was not the individual unit's lack of interest in keeping the content current, but the lack of tools to allow them to do so. They had to run to the IT department for every small change and this was causing not only delays but even reluctance in requesting changes to their content, resulting in a stale website.

The new MICHR website has a Content Management System which allows the individual units to keep their content fresh themselves without involving the IT department. The CMS is designed specifically with its users in mind and a large effort has been made to keep it simple and usable.

Research Hub

In a decentralized environment like the University of Michigan, there are lots of tools and resources that people use but there is no one place that can help everyone know about them. People end up reinveting the wheel because of the lack of options in finding the right resource and a lot of time and effort is wasted in the process.

We decided to build a one stop shop to collect and distribute the various clinical research related tools and resources that are being used and developed in and beyond the university. No more reinventing the wheel if there already exists one!
